Transcript:

…For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect, and anticipate theor great shame, and the shame in theirgrandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone. And there are these last 2 things. I’m very, very proud to live in a country that is willing to elect an elegant man President, and a country who, for all its toughness, creates courageous artists, and this is in great due respect to all the nominees, creates courageous artists who despite sensitivity that sometimes has brought enormous challenges, Mickey Rourke rises again, and he is my brother.

Sean did a good job on Prop 8, sounding less strident than usual, but “elegant?”    Jeez, can you imagine what McCain would’ve done with that?

Here’s my AOL story:

  1. THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU.
I have always admired your talent. I now have much respect for you and I hope that those people who have hatred toward people learn something.
More people in the spotlight should have your courage. We are all EQUA!!!!

  2. Thank You Sean Penn.

  3. Score one for Chavez of Venezuela. One of the many reasons I don’t go to the movies.
Who wants to listen to a bunch of illiterates commenting on things about they know nothing. Example: Oprah Winfrey who continually rails at “Racist America” while, at the same time, beating a rut into the ground on her way to the bank as the “..richest woman in the USA.”

  5. Hugo Chavez has already sent his congratulations. They arrived by the same messenger who delivered congratulations from Fidel Castro, and the inmates at Gitmo.

  7. Sean Penn, you are a dunce, who feigns a knowledge of a world that you actually know very little of, and spew a vitriol against all America really stands for, in favor of ethical and moral anarchy, which Hollywood praises. You are just a well paid low life.

  10. Why didn’t he thank his wife? It’s customary to thank one’s spouse.

  11. Shame on Sean Penn for attempting to make those who believe differently than him, and voted differently than him, feel ashamed for those beliefs. Sure, those who had signs outside the Oscars that night should be ashamed of their actions. But to lump extreme protestors with those who merely took a stand for the definition of marriage as it has always been is irresponsible and despicable.

Mr. Penn, when you called shame upon those you disagree with, you became just like who you are fighting against.

  12. eric: i think you have a valid point in that people shouldn’t be ridiculed in public for their beliefs, but bigotry is bigotry, no matter how you say it. in a situation like proposition 8, you are either for it, or against it; there is no difference between “taking a stand for the definition of marriage” and saying that one group of people has more rights than another. i’m not one for binaries, but in this instance, it’s difficult to see a grey area.

  13. I still wish Mickey had won, but I reckon he did well – except for not thanking his wife who seemed to think his final dedication [the one that was about Mickey] was going to be about her.

My wife gets angry if I forget to close the loo so I can’t imagine how Robin must of reacted when she got him home that night!

    Two points.
    1. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t say that people shouldn’t be ridiculed in public for their beliefs and then turn around and say that bigots deserve it. Just be honest and say that only those who you agree with don’t deserve to be publically ridiculed.
    2. You are creating bigotry where there isn’t any. In order for there to be bigotry, there would have to be human rights violations taking place. Since owning a marriage license is not a basic human right, restricting the owning of said marriage license can’t be a human rights violation.

Since the beginning of recorded history, the definition of marriage has been between a man and a woman. If you want to try to change that definition to better suit your worldview, then fine. But don’t call those who stand up for the traditional definition of the word names, it makes you look childish and ignorant.
